With a reworked monograph and the pre-released harbinger single "Complete", a little bit of the direction of Leitbild was released in 2016. Chris Pohl, the Berliner bandhead, and his front-page woman Ulrike Goldmann, were thrown with Leitbild back into the light of the scene interest. After two 4th place hits in the German album charts, the excitement is naturally big, as to how the new, the fans will react to the elegant and sophisticated new-coming album. After around 15 years of the band (Blutengel)'s history, the handsome Chris and the delicate Ulrike don't look too stressed, rather, more confident and more bold in order to deal with what's on the way (fan reactions).
"Live your Dream"; that looks like the central theme for the new CD and album, Leitbild. Do Chris and Ulli perceive it that way as well, if they think about their own career? Workaholic and scene icon Chris Pohl just quickly nods and confirms: "Yeah, in a certain manner. At least if I think about the career level, then I can say, that I live my dream. It wasn't admittedly ever my dream to be a musician since I was little, but after I began with music by playing guitar when I was around 9, I quickly wished to concentrate all of my energy on making music and to live off of it. Other than that I must also never bend to it's level; I was rebellious in such a way. I could also make from the beginning what I wanted, and nevertheless live off of it. In general, one should live their dream, doesn't matter in what area. Life isn't so long and many people will regret that they didn't do certain things. There are still things that I should've done before it was too late. But, as a matter of fact, I'm working on that. Because someday I want to be able to say, that I was very close to achieving my dream."
Ulrike: "Absolutely! Next to my main career (nurse), I always wanted to make music to this date. I always wanted to be a singer, ever since I was 18, and I've filled this dream since then.
Bold letters: "Many people dive into something new or different out of comfort and fear, into the big and gray masses below", bandhead Chris Pohl concerns about Leitbild.
Leitbild is a term, that has as much positive connotation as it does negative. A Leitbild (role model) can give one orientation and strength, but it can also confine and suffocate an individual creation; in what spectral meaning does this term move itself to in regards to Blutengel? "In this exact spectrum is this term residing in me! One can at first, by the naming of this term, without connection, not be able to estimate whether or not it goes around a positive or a negative concept", Chris gripes about this word. He is sure: "At first, the context gives its worth. For me, it naturally is a word that describes alternative already-existent role models, that lots of people blindly follow and trust. It is already revealed in the same-named title track (Leitbild), 'We manage our very own role model/we are a role model'. With that, I want to tell people that they should scrutinize other people and things and actively do things themselves. Don't be blindly obedient or go in a direction whose ultimate goal isn't clear. Many people dive into something new or different out of comfort and fear, into the big and gray masses below. With us, Leitbild stands naturally as well for individuality. Instead, follow in the direction that is what you would personally desire."
Beliefs, trust, obedience; these things will be talked about in Leitbild. In what proportion should an individual stand to these things? Are these three areas problem-zones for our society? "I am confident thereof!", the frontman passionately says, "Those are only some of the many problem-zones. I think, that I shouldn't leave beliefs out this time. Whereto the differentiating belief-routes go, can one see very plainly on TV. It was indeed always that way, but in this day and moment, it's simply more topical and radical. But the problem I precisely mean: With beliefs that are different from what the masses believe, or beliefs that are strong, one receives problems. Naturally the trustworthy questions come about. Who can or should one trust and believe? Politicians? The church? And if yes, what can one promise with that? I also see rather here, that one should trust himself and listen to his heart. Naturally in the first line of belief questioning, but also in politics. Blind obedience is one of the worst things and takes the light of experience into the direction of disaster. Shortly am I prepared with the opinion, that everything would run better, if people would just think more and take responsibility upon themselves. We only (probably) have one life and should take the chance".
And how important are beliefs for the two full-blooded musicians? Do Chris and Ulrike believe in God? Did their beliefs change in the run of time? Again is it Chris, who nods and lets out: "I would say, that I believe in something like God. If he really is named that, if it is overall a 'he', I don't know that. I believe in something. Maybe only that I have a good feeling therewith or something that I can put all the blame on, when something scary happens. Earlier, I strictly avoided beliefs. That sort of changed. I find myself often in a dialogue with something. Maybe with another me. I often talk out loud to myself if I am alone, I discuss my problems aloud or wish things for myself. That is overall not really praying. With that, my beliefs aren't religious. Let me put it plainly: I wish for myself, that there's something better and more intelligent than humans. And I believe in that fully!"
Ulli: "Well, I don't really believe in God, respectively because I don't have a connection with Him. I have nothing against religion or beliefs. Everyone should decide religious beliefs for themselves, I just didn't grow up with this theme, thus, I do not have much of a relationship with it. Through beliefs, one can cause or change lots of things. It can either be positive or negative. Belief in this day and age has changed, is now stricter and more harshly observed, so I wouldn't really say it's gotten better or worse than a few years ago. And one should believe what they feel is best."
The band environment readily designates the album as a "personal masterpiece" and also as a "steering testimony"; which things have masterfully succeeded with Blutengel's opinion, and how far has the team of steering wheels for the new album come with it? The bandhead must laugh and gives a jolly glance: "Ahh, yeah, naturally its always a personal masterpiece. Leitbild sounds better than 'the new album of the Pohl'. As always, very good...factually I have the opinion, that it the most consistent album yet. People themselves that don't otherwise like what I make, like lots of songs in this album...'
Bold letters: "I am already excited over the comments like 'Commercialism, Mainstream, Betrayal, everything earlier was better!!!", Pohl talks about the haters, shitstorms, and the other crap from the scene.
'...I believe, that a big reason for that, is that we finally broke away from the stereotypical scene outlook of gothic culture. What will the fans say? Well, there should at least be two parts there to accompany the older fans' reactions. Could we use a guitar? How did we do it earlier? Well...are we allowed to do what we want and develop ourselves further? In this album, I completely faded the doubts out, because I am to blame, to try to always satisfy the eternal whiners. It just doesn't work and it isn't my goal. With that being said, this album is as a matter of fact, very ripe. I made music, that I like, without thinking about the haters. It's very liberating, since we always tried beforehand to pack a few older-scene songs in. This time, we didn't do that and because of that, I believe that people think it's more mainstream and open on all sides. What we definitely did NOT want to do, was make a typical-scene sounding album with the stereotypical sounds, the 'I am so in the scene and you aren't!' attitudes."
"We have developed ourselves further in the last few years, be it only agewise or musically. My personal character has grown and I work better with songwriting now. That is for me 'masterful'.", Ulrike adds in.
Masterful was also the concern that needed to be brought out of its comfort zone. "When you correlate that to the album musically, then we've definitely brought it out. We have riskily brought out absolute radio-numbers like 'Lebe deinen Traum'! Oi vey! With that, some people would definitely love to stone us and call it bigoted, instead of trying to understand the big picture. It was more comfortable to make a modern-scene album and to hope that we please everyone. But as everyone knows, I like to do things uncomfortably and I do what I like. I am already excited over the comments like 'Commercialism, Mainstream, Betrayal, everything earlier was better!!! But, these comments only come from people that don't understand the musical scene. I believe, with 27 years of experience with the scene under my belt, that I can say that I know what I'm talking about. The scene earlier stood, that the individual should be tolerant and not let anything dictate them. If now, only designated music comes through the scene-control, because it conforms with certain critics, then it's somehow a paradox. Naturally can it and it is allowed to be textually darker and more intensive. But that's who we are and consequently I think that we'll pass by the control and if not, then not. ", Chris riskily asses Blutengel's condition.
Blutengel 2017; a band that goes its own way and nevertheless succeeds through the calls of the naysayers. Blutengel with "Save Us" landed in place 4 in the German album charts. Does this put pressure on the new album? Chris and Ulrike talk about this form of determination and some expectations pretty often. Ulli explains: "For me, a chart placing doesn't play a big role. But I'm always joyed if our fans or listeners find our albums so good that they buy it so often that a chart placing is possible. I always truthfully put myself under pressure, directly when it goes about solos or live-performances. I'm always sour with myself if something didn't sound right or go how it should've. I seldom set defined targets though, because I usually end up disappointing myself if I can't fulfill them, and I don't like that".
Chris, concentrating and says: "Some sort of pressure is always there. We've now in our history had two albums place #4 in the album charts. One sees anything less as a non-success. Nevertheless, clever people know what charts mean for small scene bands and I am one of those people. Naturally it's awesome to be so high up in the charts, but I've said many times time and again, that what is most important is full music halls and booked venues in order to quantify success. Maybe is a chart placing always a little part of that recognition and yeah, I would be joyed if we at least landed on 4, but that's not my goal. My goal is to deliver a super awesome record that inspires the fans and newcomers. They show that we are not just one of the many electro-combos, because that's not what we are anymore. And yeah, I'm someone who already strongly tries to carry out his goals. I've already taken only one overall goal and that is to make music for a long time without bending myself to its whim!"
It is striking that the band pictures in the run of time have become less playful, rather distinctly more puristic and appear cooler in tone as before. As well, the color blue often finds usage; a color that generally and nobly portrays an aristocratic feeling through the concepts like "blue blood". Blue also stands for clarity and is the color of a sound mind. Does Blutengel in the year 2017 stand for the clear messages of a sound mind and a confident distance from mainstream? "Oh, a very pretty association...", Chris smiles and further continues, "Factually, you are not very wrong with that. Everyone can use black, preferably a dark blue. Like the beginning of the night or the deep ocean. It's all a matter of taste. Maybe it's brought with my age, but I don't like all of these 'Fuck off-Screw that-Gothic-Cliche' pictures anymore, that say: If you don't have a black cover with an angel or a skull, then you're not goth. Yawn, that's boring! We almost always have women on our covers because I like women. We build the rest according to our theme. In this case, a girl on a lectern, whatever appeals to me materialistically, but ultimately she does have black smoke wings that suggest that what she says doesn't have to be bad. She sort of symbolizes, on the cover, a role model. A distance from mainstream is something I will always have, but I also find it good that we could infiltrate it. For me, the word mainstream is nothing more than a foul name. Only the music that one labels mainstream, often doesn't appeal to me. Too many people mix up mainstream with success, because Rammstein is very, very successful, but hardly mainstream!"
Bold letters: "A chart placing doesn't play a big role for me", dark pop-queen Goldmann talks about commercial success.
"Immortal"; immortality is a theme, that people have fascinated themselves with for years. Is immortality the most desired state to be in? Here will frontwoman Ulrike report word for word because this song comes from her feather and quill: "'Immortal' describes the situation of a young woman, that was left by her love. If it is because of death or toxic love, is to be interpreted by the listener. Everyone has surely wished at least once in their lives to be immortal. Wouldn't it be pretty to look the same in 1000 years as you do right now, in the transformation into immortality? On the other side, one would see lots come and go, be it loved ones or the fast-paced society we live in. I wouldn't like to be immortal. If I was though, I'd truthfully only be making music for the next 300 years. A few trips around the world would be great."
By the workload that Blutengel has driven for years, one can say that they wouldn't be able to imagine a Chris Pohl as idle. Sweet idleness applies also highly to a philosophical state that ultimately allows free space to think about things and to explore something new. "Good point! Factually, sweet idleness can encourage creativity. In summer, I liked to sit on the patio . Lots of people read or heard music or did something worse: fumbled around on their phones. I simply sat there and let my thoughts fly. Thereby, ideas come and one can simply plan things. Directly going about big steps is important to think about in peace. It is during this that I go on trips in my soul. I love to do that, when I find time", the singer and songwriter elaborates.
Justice, punishment, "Day of Justice"; what type of detention does Mastermind Pohl have to go through in heaven? "Oh, my sense of justice is very strong! I don't know, what would be the worst punishment for me, but I also don't have anything to fear. I live my life with my rules and they are based on honor, empathy, understanding, love, respect, and tolerance. If one lives like that, then one is somehow not really bad. Okay, safely in a biblical sense would I have to go through punishment for my infidelity. But for that, I'd merely have to sit for an hour in detention and other than that were the girls also not innocent. Yes sir!", the charismatic Berliner lets out. (So....does that mean Chris has cheated on a woman before? Or had an affair with someone married?)
Speechlessness and when someone just doesn't have anything left to say is probably the most bitter way to end a relationship; Ulrike and Chris look back at their own experiences. Chris reveals: "It's worse when one doesn't understand oneself. Talks a lot, but nothing happens. I talk and discuss very passionately and I clear up my actions and feelings. If one (a woman) turns around everything I say, then I lose it. I had to go through that an extreme lot and I started to believe, that one simply could not talk with women. But I was very very wrong. The problem only was, that it can carry on for a long time until someone has found the woman (past doubts and questions) and that something works out".
Ulli views this position very honestly, her words appear very hurtfully: "The worst is if fear comes from love. I wouldn't like to say more to that."
Wounds; injuries hurt awfully and bring a certain regard, the calm Ulli explains with wise words: "Out of everything, whatever happens, I don't care if it's good or evil, one withdraws consequences. Every wound leaves behind a scar, some positive, some negative. I always had to enforce myself, didn't matter what circumstance, but with time that made me strong and confident. I became more courageous and I can safely say that I achieved something. The sum of all wounds, doesn't matter if good or bad, resulted in the Ulrike of today".
The end of the question stays back in today, whereupon the Blutengel Team is excited in regards to the opening-of and tour of Leitbild. Chris without a doubt: "Because I'm very cynically hardwired, I'm very excited about all of the mean and dumb comments. There's already been so many. 'Chris wrote a book; now he's commercial and I now find Blutengel dumb'; 'Single's dumb, hair's dumb, mainstream!' Ahh, I can really laugh so much and so often because of that. But in all honesty: I naturally hope that that the fans like the album, and with the nasty 'mainstreaming' and 'commercialism', that we can obtain more fans. I'm naturally also excited about the tour and finally being able to see my fans again. It's already been a long time, because we don't play like other bands, permanent and overall. But with us, the relationship is still fresh. It's beautiful when one can finally see it all again.
And as well, Ulrike gifts us along with her thoughts before the coming responsibilities, her pretty smile: "The reactions of the fans, in regards to the album, on the concerts with the great shows, fantastic musicians, and performance princesses on the stage.
